VERTICAL DROP SWITCH DESIGN

KEYWORDS: Amusement, Product Design, Finite Element Analysis

After completing a roller coaster segment, the ride vehicle comes to a stop atop the vertical drop switch. In a sudden plunge, the switch system releases the vehicle into a controlled free fall, precisely braking to align the track and vehicle for the final dark ride sequence. Once securely locked in the lowered position, the vehicle seamlessly transitions into the concluding dark ride environment.

Key Highlights:

  • Concept Development: Created initial design concepts and duty cycles tailored to customer-provided ride specifications.
  • Structural Optimization: Performed comprehensive FEA to optimize structural member sizing, enhance architectural integrity and accurately estimate steel weight- key factor in the effective design of braking systems and shock absorbers..
  • Hydraulic Lift Design: Engineered a hydraulic mechanism to enable controlled free-fall motion of the ride carriage.
  • Motion Profile Engineering: Designed motion profiles and duty cycles to maximize show-scene duration at both top and bottom positions.\
  • Supplier Collaboration: Worked closely with vendors to size hydraulic cylinders, shock absorbers and other off-the-shelf subsystems for seamless integration.
